Answer
With the current advances in the healthcare sector, a Doctor of Nursing Practice-DNP has the upper hand in the profession since they hold a degree relevant to the current changes (Michigan Health Council, 2016). As a holder of DNP, a practice-focused terminal grade makes me ready for Advance Practice Nurse – APN; it enables me to support evidence-based knowledge for practice and offers expertise for steering complex structures in the healthcare industry (National Academy of Science, 2001). The American Association of Colleges of Nurses- AACN syllabus criteria for the DNP – defines the requirement for the nursing faculty and clinical leaders in the healthcare Institution (NLN, 2017; Zaccagnini& White, 2017). Hence, my decision to pursue this degree after attaining several academic qualifications in nursing is appropriate given that my career objective is to strive for an administrative leadership role and strive for a role in the nursing academia. The DNP Essentials entails the curricular prerequisites and competencies that are a requirement in Doctor of Nursing Practice courses (Decapua, 2016). This article provides a reflective summary stating the eight essentials and competency during the DNP syllabus and in everyday practice as a practicing nurse.
The Essential Eight, Advanced Nursing Practice, is relevant since my duty as a family Nurse practitioner holding a DNP degree will involve offering healthcare through examining, diagnosing, and treating complicated health issues, preventing of infections and injury, and upholding of health care (Zaccagnini & White, 2013). If I peruse education on a doctorate level, I will be in a better position to support my patients to navigate through the healthcare sector. This is because the DNP curriculum focuses on -nstitutional leadership, evidence based healthcare and quality enhancement and project expansion and execution (AACN, 2006)). The eighth essential was captured in the DNP curriculum by offering an extra attention for APN to influence patient care delivery established on scientific evidence. This reflective summary indicates that I may require additional training if I choose to join the faculty of teaching.
